Welcome to hinmansocialstudies!

They Broke the Law-- You be the Judge!

We are currently studying the Juvenile Justice System and are using the book, "They Broke the Law-- You be the Judge".  You will be looking at real,  somewhat recent,  court cases and will be playing the judge!  The purpose of this activity is to how the Juvenile court system is different than that of the adult courts.

Each day we will be reading the first part of a case in class and discussing the events of the case.  You will receive a handout that goes along with each case.  The handout will have two sections:

Section 1:  Questions to consider before you decide on a sentence.  Jot down some ideas to help you decide where you stand on the case.

Section 2:  Options for sentencing!  Read all of the options and decide what you would do if you were the judge and WHY!

HOMEWORK:

1.) The handout with questions and sentencing options is a graded assignment and will be collected in class the next day.

2.) PBWorks post for the case.

  •     Log into PBworks to post
  •     Each night you will go into the folder (on the right) "You be the Judge" and select the name of the      student that we are examining that night.
  •     Write a post that includes the following requirements:
    • Explain which punishment you would give
    • Explain WHY this is the punishment you would give
    • Take the time to agree or disagree with others

When we come back to class the next day we will pull up the posts on the Smart board and discuss what you selected.  We will then discuss the real outcome and ending in each case.

Twelve Angry Men

Over the next few days we will be exploring the first level of our courts system-- the trial court.

During class we will be viewing a classic film, Twelve Angry Men, which follows a jury during the deliberations of a murder trial.

While we are watching the film during class, you will be compiling your own evidence and reasonable doubt organizer to help you determine if you think the suspect is guilty of first degree murder.

You will also complete a 13 word vocabulary sheet; there will be a quiz on at a later date.

The nightly homework will consist of taking part in a blog on this pbworks site.  Go to the "Navigator" box on the right side of the screen and enter the folder for 12 Angry Men.  Find the blog for the appropriate day-- labeled day 1, 2 , or 3 of viewing.  Enter the correct page by clicking on it.  There will be different questions for each day.  Select one of ideas and respond to it.  Your response must use specific details from the movie and/or class to make your point.  Feel free to respond to others!

Tasks during the film/class:

  •     Complete the evidence and reasonable doubt organizer

Tasks to be completed for homework:

  • Vocabulary
  • Nightly blog responses for each night the film is viewed

Assessments (what will be graded):

  • There will be a vocabulary quiz
  • The nightly blog
  • The evidence and reasonable doubt organizer
